NCIA Member Town Hall: Federal Cannabis Policy in Flux

2026 CMCR Symposium: Cannabis & Sport

Additionally, UC San Diego’s Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research runs its annual symposium virtually this year. It runs Thursday and Friday, October 1 and 2, 8 AM to noon Pacific each day. This is a research symposium, not an industry networking event. The agenda is unusually relevant if your operation touches athletes or athletic wellness in any way. Highlights include a keynote on cannabis and athletics, an elite-athletes panel, and NCAA Student-Athlete Health and Wellness Study findings. There’s also a session on WADA’s (World Anti-Doping Agency) cannabis regulations, translational research on endocannabinoids and exercise, and a federal stakeholder panel on medicinal cannabis research funding on day two. Regulatory Watch: A Quiet Week for the MA Cannabis Control Commission

What Zen Den Is Watching This Week

The story that matters most for our audience this week isn’t an event at all. The Boston Globe reported September 25 that Massachusetts Ballot Question 8 is headed to the November 2026 ballot. It would eliminate recreational cannabis sales in the state (medical would stay). Nearly 18,000 people work in the state’s cannabis industry right now. A recent poll has it failing (55 percent against repeal, 33 percent for, 10 percent undecided). However, Ryan Dominguez of the Massachusetts Cannabis Coalition is already warning about the risk. He describes a “windfall of folks who are going to be losing their jobs and filing for unemployment.” Dispensary manager Megan Hansen flagged something worth sitting with: cannabis retail experience doesn’t always translate cleanly on a resume outside the industry, especially for workers who carry a cannabis-related record.

Separately, the CCC itself is mid-overhaul: a regulatory package covering medical licensing changes, a new testing framework, delivery and municipal opt-outs, and advertising rules kicked off September 16, with a public meeting on testing standards expected in early October and a final vote targeted for March 2027. Worth tracking even without a meeting to point to this specific week.
